The decline in the quality of education in the country is alarming so there is a need for immediate intervention. It is a sad thing that none seems to be coming soon, infrastructures are nothing to talk home about. Here we’ll try to highlight the leading causes of the decline in the education system in Nigeria.

Nigeria’s education is under the control of the Ministry of Education. The federal arm of government controls public schools while the state government controls state schools at regional levels. Let’s briefly look into the problems of education in Nigeria.

Poor Governance and Management

Talking of decline in the standard of education in Nigeria poor governance is the number reason why the sector is nothing to write home about. Even when new government officials are voted into power and their electoral promises they would still fail to deliver their promises of revamping the educational sector. Not paying as at when due to lecturers and teachers can be noticed on every level of government.

Poor Funding and Neglect of The Sector

Apart from poor governance poor funding is another challenge facing the sector. In the year 2017, Nigeria’s education sector budget was not even close to 26 per cent of the national budget recommended by the United Nations.

The benchmark set by UNESCO for a national budget is 26%. But, in the national proposal presented to the National Assembly, only 7.04& of 8.6 trillion of 2018 budget was allocated to education. So it does not end at the poor funding alone government officials pays little or no attention the attention, which is the reasons why tertiary institutions can go on strike for months has become norms.

Corruption

There are different stories of lecturers collecting bribes before they could award scores to students, admission seekers paying to get admitted and so many more.

Lack of proper infrastructure and training facilities

So?

In the past, during the era of Regional form of government Nigeria education used to be top-notch, but it is not near what it used to be.

Many schools lack the basic amenities needed for proper learning, science students have no access to laboratories. Hence, students only learn the theoretical aspects of science. It does not end at that, libraries are empty and the ones with books contain no modern study materials.

No Dedicated Teachers and Lecturers

Gone are the days while we have dedicated teachers and lecturers in the education sector, the majority are now into teaching and lecturing for the money. In the days when the teachers teach for the impact of knowledge, they are always after wellness.

In cases when they noticed a student is not performing up to the standard; they know what teaching approach to use and they are devoted to their job. To teachers of the early 1800s teaching is a calling but to those of the present, it is a means to an end.

Lack Of Teaching Aids

Teaching aids are materials used by lecturers and teachers to enhance learning and teaching. It is a sad thing that the majority of institutions of learning don’t have any materials making learning difficult.

The above are the common problems facing the Nigeria education system. It is not enough to talk about the problems without talking about the solution and that is why we are going to look into possible ways out.

  • Most of the problems are due to a lack of proper funding and budgetary allocation. To solve this problem, the government should create a committee that will be in charge of monitoring funds.
  • Examination Regulatory body should be set up to monitor examination malpractices.
  • Check and balance should be implemented in all levels of education, this will ensure the diversifications of funds stops.
  • Teachers and lecturers that are really interested in sharing knowledge should be employed instead of those applying for the paycheck alone.
  • Students should be monitor by their parents, guardian, and teachers.
  • Salaries and promotions should be awarded on time.
  • Teachers and lecturers should be provided with updated materials on the modern method of learning.
